Job Description
Icon Structures, located in the Wichita, KS area, is a growing general contractor specializing in commercial construction, providing pre-construction services, construction management, design-build work, and general contracting.
We are seeking a qualified Sr. Commercial Construction Estimator to join our team in our Wichita, Manhattan, and Kansas City (Eudora office) locations. We staff our projects correctly, our superintendents know how to build, and our leadership ensures that you are a valued part of the organization. Your efforts will directly impact our success.
Our Estimators are involved in a range of construction services, including bidding, negotiating, and estimating construction projects, as well as:
Pre-construction planning
Scheduling
Project cost accounting
Quality control
Contract administration
Safety management
Labor and equipment resource allocation
Building and maintaining relationships with owners and architects

Job Responsibilities
- Prepare accurate cost estimates based on plans and specifications.
- Solicit bids from subcontractors and vendors; distribute design documents and relevant project information.
- Help establish the base project schedule and develop project General Conditions.
- Create detailed owner proposals and bid presentation documents.
- Ensure a smooth transition from preconstruction to operations.
Preconstruction & Estimating:
- Monitor and track bid opportunities and other potential projects.
- Maintain the bid process, track bidders, and ensure comprehensive trade coverage.
- Effectively manage the preconstruction process, providing timely updates to owners and architects.
- Submit and process PRFIs (Preconstruction Request for Information) and manage the flow of information to subcontractors.
- Review design documents and specifications, preparing detailed work scopes for bid packages.
- Review subcontractor bids to ensure full project scope coverage.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with owners and architects to encourage repeat business.
Construction Knowledge & Technical Expertise:
- Thoroughly understand plans, specifications, construction means and methods, subcontractor capabilities, and building materials.
- Apply a creative approach to solving challenges related to new construction methods.
- Maintain a solid understanding of contracts, insurance, and bonding requirements.
- Utilize construction software for takeoffs and estimate preparation.
- Maintain historic pricing data to improve budgeting accuracy.
- Hold the design team accountable on Design-Build and negotiated contracts.
- Track design deliverables and adjust workload accordingly.
- Organize, lead, and document preconstruction meetings.
- Apply building code knowledge to identify possible errors or omissions.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Assist project teams when bid volume is low.
- Provide creative input during the Value Engineering phase, focusing on added value, cost reduction, and schedule optimization.
- Develop ROM (Rough Order of Magnitude) pricing using historic cost data.
- Track labor production trends and adjust estimates to maintain a competitive edge.
- Follow up with owners and contractors to secure opportunities and improve future estimates.
Skills & Experience
- High capability in construction-related software for takeoffs, estimating, and project management.
- Ensure accuracy in estimates, contracts, and bid documents to minimize project risks.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with internal teams, subcontractors, and clients.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, meet bid deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Apply creative and strategic thinking to resolve project challenges, optimize costs, and enhance efficiency.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with owners, architects, and consultants.
- Be a team player, willing to go above and beyond industry standards.
- Adjust communication style based on the audience to ensure clear, effective collaboration.
Job Qualifications
- 3-10 years in estimating, construction management, or related trades.
- Full-time position with expected overtime and travel as required.
- Strong leadership skills with effective verbal and written communication.
- High capability in construction-related software for estimating and project management.
- Ability to complete accurate estimates on schedule while maintaining project goals.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with owners, architects, and consultants.
- Be a team player, willing to go above and beyond industry standards.
- Adapt communication style based on the audience to effectively collaborate with the team.
